What is Space Weather?

Space weather refers to the environmental conditions in near-Earth space driven by solar activity. It includes solar flares, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), solar energetic particle (SEP) events, and geomagnetic storms caused when solar wind interacts with Earth's magnetosphere.

AURA-AI provides real-time space weather data from NASA's DONKI (Space Weather Database Of Notifications, Knowledge, Information), which catalogues all significant solar and geophysical events along with notifications, models, and instruments data.

Space Weather Event Types

Solar Flares (FLR)
Classified A, B, C, M, X by intensity. X-class flares are the most powerful and can affect HF radio communication on Earth's sunlit side.
Coronal Mass Ejections (CME)
Massive bursts of plasma ejected from the Sun's corona. When Earth-directed, CMEs arrive in 1–3 days and trigger geomagnetic storms.
Geomagnetic Storms (GST)
Rated G1–G5. G1 causes minor grid fluctuations; G5 can knock out satellites and cause widespread power outages. Also produces auroras.
Solar Energetic Particles (SEP)
High-energy particles accelerated by solar flares and CME shock waves. Hazardous to astronauts and high-altitude aircraft.
Interplanetary Shocks (IPS)
Shock waves in the solar wind that can trigger sudden geomagnetic disturbances even without an associated CME.
Solar Wind Enhanced (SWE)
High-speed solar wind streams from coronal holes that cause recurring geomagnetic activity and elevated auroral conditions.

Aurora Forecast & Kp Index

The Kp index (0–9 scale) measures global geomagnetic activity. Aurora borealis (northern lights) becomes visible at progressively lower latitudes as Kp rises:

Monitor this page for real-time Kp updates and CME arrival forecasts to plan aurora viewing.
